The 2022/23 ski season is in the past, all crystal balls have been handed out. Which ski stars have earned the most prize money with their successes? It will come as no surprise that the overall World Cup winners also top this list.
Mikaela Shiffrin (28) radiates everyone. With 964,200 francs, she earned more than anyone before her. Thanks to 14 World Cup victories, another four podiums and three World Cup medals, she has more than doubled her prize money compared to last year (CHF 406,745) and once again surpassed her previous premium record from the 2018/19 season (CHF 886,386.70). .
Despite two world titles, which yield slightly more than the 50,000 francs for a World Cup victory, Marco Odermatt (25) cannot match Shiffrin in terms of prize money.
With 13 World Cup wins and nine other podium finishes, he brought in CHF 941,200 (previous year: CHF 565,440) and is the new record earner for men. The previous record of Marcel Hirscher (34) from the 2017/18 season: 669,681 francs. At that time there was still ten percent less prize money.
While Shiffrin earned by far the most among the women – Sofia Goggia (30) in second place accounting for about a third – it is not so clear between places 1 and 2 for men. Odermatt triumphed in a superior manner in the overall World Cup, but Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (30) also rode well. It comes to 623,182 francs.
Lara Gut-Behrami (32) received the most prize money in the overall World Cup for the Swiss women. Three wins and another six podiums add up to CHF 314,230. Compared to the previous season (161,234 Fr.), it has almost doubled its income. But there’s more. For example with Wendy Holdener (29). Now that she has become the winner, she has almost quadrupled the amount of the previous year (68,536 CHF).
It is different with Michelle Gisin (29). After the material change in the summer, she expressed difficulties – 102,050 became 62,155 francs.
The example of Marc Rochat (30) shows how much a single top result can mean. In the final slalom he finished fourth and earned almost the same amount in just under two minutes as in all other races combined.
The Swiss minimum earners are Noel von Grünigen (27) and Janine Schmitt (22). Both came 26th in the World Cup – that’s 750 francs. They are therefore not at the bottom of the rankings for prize money. Christian Walder (31, Austria) for men and Lauren Macuga (20, USA) and Anouck Errard (24, Fr) for women each received 550 francs thanks to the 30th place.
However, the ski stars do not live on prize money alone. According to the “Handelzeitung”, Swiss-Ski pays a high six-figure sum for podium places in individual races and successes in the ratings discipline. However, unlike the World Ski Federation FIS, these figures are not communicated. In addition, income from sponsorship and supplier contracts is added. So Odermatt will break the million mark. (bir)
