Two French ski aces say goodbye

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

Tessa Worley hangs up the skis.

Careers always end with the ski season. Nicole Schmidhofer (34, Austria), Johan Clarey (42, Fr), Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen (35, No) or Marie-Michele Gagnon (33, Ka) – these are just a few of the names that are stepping down. Now there are two more.

“The giant slalom in Soldeu will be my last start in the World Cup,” Coralie Frasse Sombet announced on Instagram on Saturday evening. The 31-year-old Frenchwoman has decided to put an end to her career. “I have been lucky enough to experience extraordinary years, make many acquaintances, travel the world and live from my passion,” she writes. And adds that it is impossible to summarize all the years in one text.

In 2012, the giant slalom specialist made her World Cup debut. But her first ten starts were unforgettable. Either she dropped out in the 1st run or missed the qualification for the 2nd run. Her best result is 3rd place – in a team event in 2017. In giant slalom, Frasse Sombet has finished in the top 10 five times and has never been better than in January 2023 when she finished sixth. The fact that she never made it to the top of the world is due to several injuries. Among other things, three cruciate ligament tears have slowed her down time and time again.

Two-time world champion resigns

“The ski world is one big family and I’m very proud to have been part of it!” continued Frasse Sombet. In her 89th and last race, she can sit on the leader’s throne again in the 2nd run, eventually finishing 16th.

Her compatriot Tessa Worley also resigned with her. Until recently, it was not clear whether the two-time giant slalom world champion (2013 and 2017) would continue after this season or not. Only between the 1st and 2nd run of the last race in Soldeu did the 33-year-old announce that she was giving up her skis. Worley made his world championship debut in 2006 and has competed in a total of 255 races. She managed to win 16 giant slaloms, in this discipline there were also two small crystal balls (2016/17 and 2021/22). In total, she was on the gigantic stage 36 times. In the end she is in 11th place. (bir)
