Once they both have practically guaranteed to avoid Barcelona until the hypothetical OK League final, Calafell and Liceo meet this afternoon (7:30 p.m., OK Liga TV) in Catalonia, in a duel in which they are playing for second place.
At the moment, that position corresponds to the home team with a point advantage over Liceo, who lost four games in the regular season, and gave two draws, three defeats and three draws for Calafell.
The importance of the second place is due to the fact that, in transitions from playwhoever takes this spot will enjoy the home ground factor leading up to the finalin which they will almost certainly face Barcelona, with Palau as the hypothetical venue for three of the five games that could be played.
What seems clear is that this second place will be question two, because after Calafell’s victory last day against Noia (5-6), Reus and the team from San Sadurni, fourth and fifth respectively, have only 40 points, seven less than the Galicians and eight from the Catalans.
Although this afternoon’s game seems crucial in the fight for second place, Even when it loses, Liceo has a bullet left in its magazine, and that is the calendar. After this weekend’s match, Calafell still has to visit Palau, receive Alcoi and Reus, and finish the regular season at Igualada. The path of the team that Juan Copa is preparing between now and the end of the season is easier. They will receive Vilafranca and Igualada, visit Caldes and Lleida. The first of these rivals is already out with only three points, while the other three are fighting for the division of sixth, seventh and eighth place in the standings.
Calafell, the revelation of the season, is one of the three teams that managed to defeat Liceo. He managed it in December at Palace, 1-2, with a goal by Martí Casas 4 minutes and 36 seconds to the end. The other two Verdiblancos executioners were Barcelona, on two occasions, and Noia in San Sadurní.
For their part, the team prepared by Ferrán López has only lost to Barcelona, Reus and, surprisingly, Sant Cugat, who are fighting desperately to keep the category.
Neither the Cup nor the Catalan coach have losses for this duel, from which the winner will come out stronger in order to keep second place in the four rounds that would remain until the end of the regular part of the season and win the play-off for the championship title last season.
Women’s doubles match
For their part, the women will use the weekend to meet Manlleu today in the Champions League (17:00), in a game where nothing is at stake, since they have already qualified for the final four. Tomorrow they will visit Voltrega (12:30 p.m.) in OK Liga Iberdrola.
