Flick removes five stars from the national team

Hansi Flick springs into action.

It is the first meeting of the German national team since the disappointing World Cup in Qatar. At that time, coach Hansi Flick’s team failed silently in the group stage. Now the 58-year-old is turning his team upside down and leaving a number of big names at home.

The coach will announce his team on Friday. With Leroy Sané (27/Bayern), Niklas Süle (27/BVB) and Antonio Rüdiger (30/Real Madrid), Flick has to miss some top players. In addition, it was already clear before the appointment of the selection that Thomas Müller (33/Bayern) and Ilkay Gündogan (32/ManCity) would not be included.

Five debutants

“We don’t think we’re bringing the players in for eight days at this stage of the season. They can use the time better at home and recharge their batteries,” Flick explains why the stars were not nominated.

Germany meets Peru (25.3) and Belgium (28.3) in the international break. Flick is counting on five debutants for the two friendly matches. Josha Vagnoman (22/Stuttgart), Marius Wolf (27/BVB), Mergim Berisha (24/Augsburg), Felix Nmecha (22/Wolfsburg) and Kevin Schade (21/Brentford) are part of the senior team for the first time.

Yakin also counts on the youth

Germany will host the European Championship in 2024. Until then, a makeover needs to take place. “It is important for us that we present a good team in view of the home EM, and we need alternatives for that. We have to look for alternatives and give them time to promote,” said the former coach of Bayern his choice.

Murat Yakin is also counting on the young guns for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers. Seasoned Nati attackers such as Haris Seferovic (31) and Steven Zuber (31) are replaced by FCB shooting stars Zeki Amdouni (22) and Andi Zeqiri (23).

Portugal and Sweden nominate old stars

Meanwhile, other countries such as Portugal and Sweden continued to rely on experience. Cristiano Ronaldo (38) is back in the Portuguese selection despite a mediocre World Cup. The superstar also gains the confidence of new coach Roberto Martinez.

Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns to Sweden after a one-year absence. The 41-year-old made his comeback in Milan about three weeks ago. Before that, the striker was out for almost nine months with a knee injury. (mab)
