In the coming weeks, curling will be dominated by the World Cup medals. For women from March 18 in Sweden, for men from April 1 in Canada. The two Swiss World Cup teams have in common that they are playing together for the first time in their new formations at a World Cup. And the constellation among themselves is also quite unique: because there are two pairs in the Swiss women’s and men’s World Cup team.
Briar Schwaller-Hürlimann (29) from Zug and Yannick Schwaller (27) from Solothurn have been married since last summer. And Alina Pätz (33) from Zurich and Sven Michel (34) from Bern have also been together for years. There is a lot of love in our World Cup teams.
With so many world-class sweeping skills on the ice, who’s in charge of the broom work at home? Yannick Schwaller laughs: “The vacuum robot cleans for us.” At Pätz and Michel, on the other hand, there are no machines: “We both clean. But Sven prefers it to me…»
Both couples originated at a young age. Each in the context of a junior world championship. For Pätz and Michel, Pätz’ brother Claudio was the link, as he played in a team with Michel.
The great love in sport – just like Mirka and Roger Federer, the Swiss sports dream couple par excellence. But at the Hopman Cup, the Federers were only on the field together. The curling pairs, on the other hand, also play seriously together in mixed doubles. Pätz/Michel even won World Cup gold in 2011.
And just a few days ago there was a big duel in the SM final: the Schwallers defeated Pätz/Michel and thus secured the Swiss participation in the Mixed Doubles World Cup before the end of April in South Korea.
Live together and play together. Don’t you ever get into trouble? Michel: “You get irritated with each other faster than in the men’s team. We are not always nice to each other, but that is quickly forgotten.” Yannick Schwaller also admits that as an emotional type he gets angry more quickly with his partner. “The inhibition threshold is lower to make a comment.” His wife laughs and says, “I then remind him of the plan to stay calm. So we quickly get back into the productive pattern.”
Now, during the two World Cup tournaments, there will be a temporary separation. The men cheer along with their partners during their training week. Michel: “It’s a horror time, I’m much more nervous when I watch.” At the World Cup for men, on the other hand, Alina Pätz in Canada will even be a fan.
The hope, on the other hand, is the same for everyone: to take home a World Cup medal.
