Does HCD need another hit against the ZSC complex?

April 4, 2015: Davos defender Claude-Curdin Paschoud lands a straight left in the face of ZSC striker Chris Baltisberger.

It is a remarkably bad record that HC Davos has against the ZSC Lions. With the initial defeat in the quarter-finals of the play-offs, it is: one win from the last 18 matches against Zurich.

When the two rivals last met in the playoffs, in the 2015 Finals, Davos was going through a string of negative experiences against the Lions. Including the undisputed 3-0 defeat at the start, the record champions lost nine of their last games against Marc Crawford’s team. And yet it was Arno del Curto’s team that celebrated their 31st and final championship title to date.

Then how did HCD manage to ditch its ZSC complex? With a liberating bang. The turning point came in Game 2 of the series in Davos, when the Graubünden fell behind 2-1 after a goal from Chris Baltisberger.

Grandma Baltisberger asked worriedly

On the next occasion, defender Claude-Curdin Paschoud grabbed the Zürich striker and landed a few straights into his face. The Zurich pioneer then left with a red cheek. And because she had read in the newspaper that her grandson had been beaten, his grandmother worriedly asked Baltisberger the next day.

The Lions wing was not intimidated, but Paschoud’s performance freed HCD’s mind from the ZSC complex. Davos turned the game around in the middle third, winning 5:2 and not losing another game after a heroic performance by goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni in Game 3 (3:2 nP).

“We were 2-1 behind and had achieved little so far. I tried to do something and arouse emotions. A boxing match is a good way to do that,” said Paschoud. The 28-year-old defender is still with HCD So was Baltisberger (31) On Wednesday he was the match winner with one goal and two assists and fought a tough battle with Enzo Corvi.

Baltisberger does not want to worry about whether ZSC has settled in Davos’ heads with 17 wins from 18 games. “We don’t care what other people think. It’s important that we focus on our game.”
