She brings Chinese medicines to Wallis

Patrizia Kummer celebrated her greatest sporting triumph in 2014. At the Winter Olympics in Sochi, she won gold in the parallel giant slalom.

After more than two decades as an active athlete, she draws a line. Alpine snowboarder Patrizia Kummer (35) will start in the World Cup for the very last time in her career on Saturday. The Valais woman still looks very cool. But everywhere she is already being asked about her resignation. “In the last race I almost cried for the first run. Saturday will be emotional.”

The co-owner of a bed and breakfast in her hometown of Mühlebach USA has shaped alpine snowboarding in Switzerland like no other. She had her most successful winter in 2013/14 when, in addition to the Olympic victory in Sochi, she also won the overall classification of the World Cup and the two small crystal balls in the parallel giant slalom and parallel slalom. Kummer never imitated this performance.

Own TMC practice planned

The psychologist gained worldwide attention when she voluntarily went into quarantine for three weeks before the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing instead of being vaccinated. “Of course I would have preferred that the coverage had revolved around my athletic achievements. But in the end I stayed true to myself. Everything was good for me.”

Being true to yourself has always been the top priority in Patrizia Kummer’s career. And even now the Valais woman goes her own way. She will soon complete her studies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). As a therapist, she wants to give something back to people in her own practice. “I have never been able to express my willingness to help in top sport.” Kummer’s life won’t be the same after the season ends. The only constant: their bond with their homeland. Kummer’s TCM practice, how could it be otherwise, originated in Bellwald in Valais.
