A curious line causes confusion between Rappi and Zug

A majority of Lakers fans protested loudly. Countless hands are thrown away, followed by a concert of whistles. What happened? It is the 30th minute of the first quarter-final match between Rappi and Zug. EVZ defender Christian Djoos tries to slow down Dominic Lammer. The SCRJ striker pushes the Swede into the perimeter of the goal and moves the briefcase.

But none of the referees blow the whistle, to the astonishment of the spectators. On the contrary: they actively let the game continue because Zug is in possession of the puck. Goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni immediately drives to the team bench and makes way for an extra field player. That’s a smart move: EVZ can’t concede a goal (not even an own goal), on the one hand because the goal was postponed, on the other hand because the whistle would blow immediately if a Laker came on goal.

Rule is rarely used

So Zug’s sixes run up a few times, but nothing happens. This curious scene takes place because of Rule 63.4 called “Delayed Whistle”. It is especially crucial that the housing is moved by an attacking player and not one of you. Although this rule has been around for a number of years, it is rarely used, as it is usually the responsibility of one’s own defenders or the goalkeeper.

However, Wednesday’s incident in Rappi is the second in a few days. The same scene happened on Saturday in Bern in the last pre-playoff game against Kloten. The only difference is that the EVZ, unlike the SCB, tries out the trick of replacing the keeper with a field player and scoring one more goal with one man. “So smart”, testifies the MySports expert and ex-referee Tobias Wehrli.
