Nati coach Yakin offers GC star Schmid

For the matches in Novi Sad against Belarus (March 25) and the home game in Geneva against Israel (March 28), national coach Murat Yakin mainly relies on the players who were at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.

Four players return to the national team in Cédric Zesiger, Jordan Lotomba, Zeki Amdouni and Andi Zeqiri, with Grasshoppers’ Dominik Schmid making his debut. Yakin will have to do without central defender Fabian Schär, who should use the rest to fully recover from a broken toe. The participation of Xherdan Shaqiri, who had to be replaced for the last time at his club Chicago Fire with thigh complaints, is also about to end. After further investigation, a final decision must be made on Sunday whether the offensive player can be there.

With his nominations, Yakin sets an example for the young players. Amdouni and Zeqiri, who have played key roles in FC Basel’s sporting upswing in recent weeks, would pose a threat with their speed, as would Noah Okafor, who was out for the World Cup. According to the national coach, Lotomba’s return is due to the fact that he has now established himself in the position of right back at Nice and can thus fill a potential bottleneck for the team.
