What was previously clear is now a fact: Gianni Infantino (52) remains president of FIFA. This was decided on Thursday at the 73rd congress of the world federation in Kigali (Rwanda). Since there was no opposing candidate, Infantino was elected with applause.
There have recently been national associations that have publicly opposed the president – for example, the DFB on Wednesday. However, Infantino still receives a lot of support from Asia, Africa, Oceania and South America. In the elections, each of the 211 national associations has one vote, no matter how big or small it is.
The Wallis has been in office since 2016, when he took over from Sepp Blatter. Infantino was re-elected for the first time in 2019, now for a second term. The 37-member FIFA council recently made it clear that the three-term limit applies. Because the three years following Blatter’s resignation between 2016 and 2019 were not full terms, Infantino may run for a third term from 2027 to 2031. (mom)
