The 19 World Cup descents (ten for men, nine for women) are over. Time for a first sober assessment. And from the Swiss point of view, in terms of victories, they are extremely thin. There was not a single triumph of a Swiss ski athlete in the highest discipline.
A look at the statistics shows that Switzerland last had a winless downhill winter at the World Cup 17 years ago. Fränzi Aufdenblatten (5th) and Bruno Kernen (8th) were then the best in our country in the discipline classification.
Corinne Suter (28) and Marco Odermatt (25) came closest to victory in the past four months. Suter finished second at the season opener in Lake Louise (Can). Odermatt only had to give way to one opponent in Beaver Creek (USA), Gröden (It) and Wengen BE. Both finish the downhill season in third place overall.
More than just a consolation: in the most important race of the year, Switzerland struck twice in the downhill. At the World Cup in Courchevel/Méribel, France, there was gold in the highest discipline thanks to Jasmine Flury (29) and Marco Odermatt. (yep)
