Mayer comeback after insane dismissal from TV?

class=”sc-3778e872-0 gWjAEa”>

Matthias Mayer has won gold at the Olympic Games three times. In 2014 he triumphed in the downhill, in 2018 and 2022 he won the Super-G.

At the last descent of the winter in Soldeu, a man becomes the protagonist who is not at the start but in the coaching zone in the finish area. His name: Matthias Mayer. In the old week, the three-time Olympic champion from Austria surprisingly resigned for the descent in Bormio (It). But with his trip to Andorra, the 32-year-old from Carinthia is fueling hopes of a comeback next winter for many Austrians.

“I got a very good impression of Matthias here,” says ÖSV Speed head coach Sepp Brunner to Blick.

ÖSV trainer is enthusiastic after talking to Mayer

Until a few weeks ago, Brunner didn’t think Mayer would consider returning. But now Beat Feuz’s (36) ex-trainer has changed his mind: “Matthias seems completely recovered, the many ski trips he has made in recent weeks have clearly done him a lot of good. And after the conversation I had with him here I wouldn’t rule out a comeback.”

Brunner offers an argument that would speak for Mayer’s successful return to the ski circus: “He’s still very good on the start list.” And perhaps it is also the result of this season’s final descent that encourages Mayer to keep going – his friend and compatriot Vincent Kriechmayr (31) celebrates his fourth win of the season.

Odermatt’s chances for a Maier record are still good

On the other hand, Marco Odermatt (25) has to accept a setback in the battle against Hermann Maier’s (50) record points. The overall World Cup winner recorded his second-lowest result this winter with 15th place. The 25-year-old now has 1,842 points on his account. He would need a win and a third-place finish or two second-place finishes in Super-G and giant slalom to break Hermann Maier’s 2000 mark.

Statistically, there is a very good chance that Odermatt will make it. In the giant slalom he was never worse than third this winter, in the Super-G the Buochser only missed the podium once this year (4th in the World Cup). The Super-G in Soldeu will start on Thursday at 11.30 am.
