A few hours before the kick-off of the round of 16 of the second leg between Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, serious incidents occurred in the southern Italian city.
After disputes in the first leg in Frankfurt and a subsequent legal deadlock, Italian authorities had banned the sale of tickets to people from Frankfurt. So you wanted to avoid new clashes between the two fan camps. Eintracht then waived the entire guest contingent.
According to the “Corriere dello Sport”, about 600 Eintracht supporters traveled to Naples despite the ban of fans. The fans were taken to their hotel by bus, escorted by police, but were pelted with Pyros and other objects by Napoli fans on the way. Italian fans would also have stayed at the hotel. The police eventually sealed everything and kept an eye on the hotel with a large contingent.
Violent riots later broke out in the city: the German fans attacked the police and threw pyros and other objects at them. Several cars, including at least one police car, were set on fire. A group of Eintracht Ultras threw stones at shop windows and destroyed tables and chairs in the restaurants. A meeting of Eintracht supporters and Napoli Ultras was prevented by the police. There have been no injuries so far. (mbi)
