Only one race of the season has been driven, then you really have to be annoyed with Ferrari. The reason is the installation of a new control electronics component.
It is already the third car part that has to be replaced this season. Because the teams are only allowed to replace two parts of the control electronics, driver Charles Leclerc (25, 5 GP wins and 18 pole positions) is penalized. If Ferrari replaces more parts before the race in Jeddah, the penalty will be increased accordingly.
In a media round, Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur explains the accident: “We had two different problems on Sunday in Bahrain. The first problem was the second in the race on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, it was always the control unit (ECU).”
Similar to a black box on an airplane, the ECU is used to record data for later analysis and also controls the car’s main electronic systems. At the opening race in Bahrain, Leclerc retired on lap 39 with engine problems en route to the podium. Now follows the next setback for the Monegask in the young season. (dti)
