“Intervening here is a disaster”

After the second leg in the Champions League between Manchester City and RB Leipzig, it’s not just about Erling Haaland’s (22) 5-goal gala, but once again about the video evidence.

What happened? It is the 19th minute in Manchester when Rodri (26) heads the ball from very close to the arm of Benjamin Henrichs (26) after a corner kick. The Leipzig defender only touches the ball minimally and also has his back to Rodri. After the scene, the game continues normally, no player complains.

But the VAR intervenes out of the blue, asks referee Slavko Vincic (43) to go to the screen, whereupon he awards a penalty kick. Haaland scores the 1-0. Leipzig can’t believe it.

The decision also causes bewilderment in the blue sports studio. Ex-referee Urs Meier (64) says during half-time: “The whole world does not want a penalty, but the VAR does want a penalty. The strange thing is that the referee looks at the scene and then gives the penalty.”

“The fact that you intervene here is a disaster,” agrees former international Marco Streller (41).

Henrichs argues, Hummels demands change

The perpetrator reacts after the game: “It’s never handball, I didn’t even know what was happening. The decision took us off course,” says Benjamin Henrichs.

And a competitor from RB Leipzig is also making itself heard. BVB star Mats Hummels (34) writes on Twitter about the scene: “We need a change in decision making about hand punishment. It’s going in the wrong direction now.”

It remains to be seen in which direction the handball decisions will go in the future. But it won’t stop at the last discussion. (byl)
