‘I would have liked to score a double hat-trick’

Erling Haaland celebrates against Leipzig.

In the eighth finals first leg against RB Leipzig (1-1), Erling Haaland (22) was on the field at Manchester City for an hour and a half. His criminal record? 22 touches and a shot wide of the mark. Not enough for a striker of his stature. The Norwegian proves what he can actually do in the second leg. He scored five times in the 7-0 win. And is “only” on the field for 63 minutes.

No wonder he is celebrated for his historic achievement. The British media describe him as a “five star Haaland”, the Spanish “Marca” simply calls him “a beast” and in the Italian “Corriere dello Sport” the Norwegian broke “like a hurricane over the Champions League”.

Broken several records

The records he broke? Impressive. There are 78 seconds between goals one and two – the fastest double in the Premier League. As the third player, Haaland also puts together a pack of five – in 35 minutes. Lionel Messi (2012 for Barcelona) needed 61 minutes and Adriano (2014 for Shakhtar Donetsk) 63 minutes.

Haaland has already scored eleven times in the Champions League this season, with a total of 33 goals. He only needed 25 games to do this and, at 22 years and 236 days, is the youngest player to break the 30 mark. The previous record holder Ruud van Nistelrooij (46) needed 34 matches.

Haaland also sets a club record. He scored 39 times in 35 games in all competitions. Never before has a Man City player scored so many goals in one season.

“What should I do?”

“I’ll give him five bottles of red wine,” Pep Guardiola said after the game. “He was excellent – as so often. He scored five goals in 60 minutes, who knows how many he would have scored in 90.”

Despite the praise, Haaland is angry with his coach. “I told him I would have liked to score a double hat-trick, but what should I do?” he told BT Sport. Guardiola’s reaction? “If he had already achieved that at 22, 23, his life would be boring. Now he has a goal, that’s why I made the substitution.”

If you look at Haaland’s performance, it doesn’t seem unrealistic that he will also achieve this goal. Finally, he says, “My superpower is scoring goals.” (bir)
