Finally positive news in the drama about former figure skater Roman Kostomarow (46): The Russian woke up from his artificial coma on Friday and has regained consciousness.
The drama started on January 10. He is taken to hospital due to pneumonia. After that, his health continued to deteriorate – due to blood poisoning and tissue death, his feet and parts of his hands had to be amputated to save his life.
A cerebral haemorrhage and two strokes follow. Kostomarows is placed in an artificial coma.
On Friday then the bright spot. As reported by the Russian media, the 2006 Olympic champion woke up from the artificial coma and was able to breathe on his own again.
The next positive news follows three days later: according to the Tass news agency, Kostomarov can now speak to his wife Oksana Domnina (38).
She was always by his side during the treatment and used a trick: as the Russian online portal woman.ru writes, the 2009 ice dancing world champion put on a nurse’s suit so as not to attract attention and spend time in peace with her husband. The two have been a couple since 2007 and got married in 2014.
However, Kostomarov’s condition remains critical: despite the amputations, tissues and cells are still dying and his immune system would not really function. His old companion Ilja Averbuch (49) told “Tass”: “We pray. I admire Oksana’s mother and Roman for their courage».
According to woman.ru, a psychologist was made available to guide Kostomarov through the awakening process. Above all, he must learn to accept himself as a different person and realize that life will never be the same again.
Roman Kostomarow experienced the highlight of his sporting career in 2006 at the Olympic Games in Turin. Together with his old ice partner Tatjana Nawka (47), the Russian won the gold medal in ice dancing. The duo also won three European Championships and two World Championships. (byl)
