Four games without a win, most recently just a 1-1 draw against relegation contenders Stuttgart – Eintracht Frankfurt have lost what they took for granted in the first half of the season (fourth place).
“We don’t think it will go that way for us, but we are in sixth place, very close to the Champions League places,” said coach Oliver Glasner. “We have had the best first half in the club’s history. For the first time in the club’s history, we are in the last 16 of the Champions League. We are still in the DFB-Pokal. And we have no confidence? We are idiots!” says Glasner with a smile.
The Champions League issue could at least be resolved on Wednesday. Then Frankfurt must make up for a 0-2 draw at Napoli in the eighth finals. And this probably without fan support. Since the Italian authorities cannot guarantee safety, they have issued a ticket ban for Germans.
This was lifted after protest from Eintracht, but only to issue a new ban for Frankfurt-based supporters on Sunday night. Eintracht boss Philipp Reschke estimates the success rate of a second protest to be low: “Given the time, it is now about principle and the future.” It is probably more realistic that Frankfurt will waive the road quota of 2700 tickets on Wednesday.
