What’s the highlight?

The most important item on the agenda of the 73rd FIFA Congress is the election of the president. Gianni Infantino is up for re-election until 2027. De Walliser succeeded Sepp Blatter in February 2016 and now wants to start his second term. According to the 37-member Fifa council, Infantino can return to work in four years because his first term was not complete according to the statutes. Despite some criticism from Europe in recent years, Infantino’s re-election from the 211 national federations is a matter of form. He is the only candidate.

Why is there no rival candidate?

According to the statutes, an application must be submitted no later than four months before the Congress, which is supported by at least five associations nationwide. While some European federations tried to field an opponent, this was not the case as a challenger to Infantino probably wouldn’t have stood a chance.

Who can Infantino count on?

At the end of the application period in mid-November, the continental associations from South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania pledged their support to the current president. The Swiss Football Association also supports Wallis. Other European federations will most likely refuse Infantino the vote, such as the Norwegian federation. DFB chairman Bernd Neuendorf left his vote open and put the support of the Swiss under certain conditions.

What else is on the agenda?

Just like at a general meeting, the minutes of the last congress and the daily agenda are approved, as well as the 2022 annual accounts and the budget for the following year and the next cycle (2023 to 2026). Subsequently, applications from the individual associations will be processed. The Norwegian federation submitted an application on February 16.

What is the application of the Norwegian Federation about?
