BBC goes back to football legend Lineker

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Presenting again on the BBC: Gary Lineker.

Gary Lineker’s suspension lasted just one weekend. The English football legend will host the BBC’s “Match of the Day” show this Saturday.

“Gary is a valuable part of the BBC – and I know what the BBC means to Gary. I look forward to him hosting the show next weekend,” BBC chief Tim Davie said in a statement.

Davie ousted Lineker last week for comparing the British government’s rhetoric on asylum issues to that of Nazi Germany. Lineker is said to have violated the BBC’s neutrality rules.

However, the broadcaster shot itself in the foot with the suspension: connoisseurs and football legends Alan Shearer and Ian Wright canceled their participation in the show, and several Premier League giants boycotted the BBC over the weekend. “Match of the Day” ran last Saturday not only without a moderator, but also without analysis and interviews.

Lineker: Suspension cannot be compared to war

Now the BBC is back: Lineker is allowed to moderate again and the guidelines are being revised. “I thank everyone for this solidarity, especially my colleagues at BBC Sport,” Lineker wrote on Twitter on Monday. “I’ve had the privilege of presenting on the BBC for nearly three decades and I’m proud to work for the best broadcaster in the world. I look forward to being back at ‘Match of the Day’ on Saturday.”

The hugely popular Lineker is not deprived of a last political thought: “As difficult as the past few days have been, it simply cannot be compared to having to flee persecution or war to seek refuge in a land far away. It is heartwarming to see the empathy for such a need in so many of you. We remain a tolerant, open and generous country.” (cmu)
