Swiss handball team no chance in Hungary

Losing in Hungary is no disgrace, the Eastern Europeans are a top team, which they underlined with their 8th place at this year’s World Cup. However, how the Swiss presented themselves was sobering. While they were convincing on the offensive at Schaffhausen, there wasn’t much that matched front and rear this time.

In the first 20 attacks, the Swiss only scored six goals. As a result, they trailed 6:14 in the 25th minute. After a good phase, the deficit was four goals after 31 minutes (12:16). It was a short uprising, in the 35th minute it was 12:20. The maximum deficit was eleven goals (20:31/50.). Fortunately, from the point of view of the guests, the Eastern Europeans did not go all the way.

A glimmer of hope for the Swiss was 19-year-old Felix Aellen, who scored five of seven deals in his second international match. Circle runner Lucas Meister also scored five goals and did not miss a single shot.

On the other hand, director Andy Schmid, who will succeed Suter as national coach in 2024, fell far short of his potential. The five-time Bundesliga MVP recorded an attacking efficiency of 30 percent with three goals. The ailing builder Lenny Rubin, who was the best Swiss thrower with eight goals on Thursday, was not used after three missed shots.

Despite the two clear defeats, the starting position in Group 6 is still good for the Swiss. They remain second with four points from four games – the top two teams in each group plus the best four of the eight third-placed teams qualify for the final in Germany in 2024. A victory in the final game on April 30 in Winterthur against Lithuania is probably enough to qualify – they meet Georgia for that.
