Will the title fight in Spain be decided at the green table?

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Raphinha celebrates the 1-0 win against Bilbao with his Barça colleagues.

Things are going well on the field. FC Barcelona won Sunday’s league match against Bilbao 1-0. Raphinha takes the golden blow.

Off the field, however, things look bleak for the Catalans. Between 2001 and 2018, Barça is said to have transferred nearly €7 million for advisory services to a company owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, former vice-chairman of the CTA refereeing committee.

The accusation is steep – and clear: FC Barcelona had a strictly confidential agreement with Negreira “in exchange for money to give FC Barcelona priority in the referees’ decision-making process,” it says. A judge decides whether to go to court. If that happens, it should be uncomfortable for Barça. In similar cases, fines, points deductions or even forced descents have been imposed in the past.

Point deduction would be fatal

Points deduction would be fatal for the Catalans. The club withdrew from European competitions. They are still in the cup (semi-final against Real Madrid). But the competition is the big goal for trainer Xavi and his team, now even a mandatory task. Barca are still nine points ahead of the royal team after beating Bilbao.

Incidentally, they responded to the corruption scandal of their arch-rival. Real President Florentino Perez and his board of directors met on Sunday — then released a statement. “Real Madrid expresses deep concern about the seriousness of the matter and reiterates its full confidence in the judicial process.” The club had “agreed to appear in the trial to defend its legitimate interests”. So Real would testify if the judge made the case public.

So it cannot be ruled out that the Spanish league will be decided at the green table this year. (mom)
