Numbers, numbers, numbers. They shape the skiing career of Mikaela Shiffrin (27, USA). No wonder, because she has long since won everything there is to win. But she prefers people, experiences and feelings. “Some days I wonder if I shouldn’t do something more meaningful, like a doctor for example,” she told Spiegel eight years ago. But she just decided to “dedicate this part of my life to skiing”.
The woman from Avon, Colorado, has won 87 World Cups. It is not only felt, but statistically the ultimate in ski racing. In Are, Shiffrin flies light as a feather through the gates – first in the giant slalom, then in the slalom. She wins both races with ease. Did she feel no pressure? After all, for days, weeks and months, she had been constantly asked when she would overtake and catch up with skiing legend Ingemar Stenmark (86 World Cup victories).
To answer the question, you have to turn the wheel of history back over three years. Shiffrin’s father, Jeff, is seriously injured in an accident at work. Mikaela immediately travels back from Europe. The former anesthesiologist succumbed to his injuries at the age of 65. “It was extremely traumatizing to see my father die in the hospital,” Shiffrin said recently. She never believed such a thing could happen. He was not only Shiffrin’s father, but also the rock of strength, her Superman – invincible, invulnerable, always there for her. And as a little kid, he gave Shiffrin three life sentences, which she still lives by today: “Be nice. Think first. Have fun.” So: be nice. think first Have fun.
Shiffrin remained kind and thoughtful even after her father’s death. However, she lost the fun – not only in skiing. Thoughts of retirement swirled through her mind. Shiffrin went on and won over and over because she’s just a phenomenon. But she wasn’t happy. She just couldn’t remember the runs, she reported. “I only had parts of the route in mind. This made it difficult to ski the way I wanted to. I couldn’t trust my head anymore.”
Shiffrin felt the pressure from the public. She went to work for a sports psychologist and realized: losing a ski race is irrelevant compared to my father’s death. This did not make them completely immune. That’s why Shiffrin got a trick: “If I focus on winning, it’s too much pressure. If I focus on skiing, I can handle it.”
However, that doesn’t sound fun. But you need that to get fit and strong in the summer and to train on a mountain at minus 20 degrees in the winter at 6 a.m. That’s where Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (30), Shiffrin’s boyfriend, comes into play. They fell in love after Jeff Shiffrin’s death. “When we see each other, we have a smile afterwards. He makes me so much happier » says Mikaela even today.
This is also confirmed by Shiffrin’s mother and coach Eileen. When Blick asked about their relationship last December, she said, “Mikaela is enjoying life more than she did when she started her career. And I give Aleks credit for that as well. It’s important to find happiness in things you haven’t seen before. you’ve seen – he’s very good at it.” Her daughter has a different perspective on this part of her career and enjoys the races, the environment and the people. “She is aware of the incredible office she works in.”
It’s unclear how long Shiffrin will continue to work in this office. Insiders say she wants to step down from Kilde within two years — perhaps after the 2026 Olympics. Either way, it remains the focus.
“She deserves the record more than anyone else,” says Stenmark. She has a good technique, a strong head and is physically top. And she’s smart. She doesn’t have to risk 100 percent and knows that the others have to go over the limit to beat her and they will make mistakes.” she will be the first to win 100 World Cup races.”
The pressure on Shiffrin’s shoulders will not ease – even after her record. So don’t worry, she’s found the recipe to get along with him.
