Karim Benzema (35) and Didier Deschamps (54) probably won’t be best friends in this lifetime. The first disagreements between the Real striker and the coach of the French national team became known at the World Cup – now both accuse each other of lying.

It is precisely this World Cup drama that goes into the next round. Flashback: Top striker Benzema is injured for the tournament in Qatar and leaves the French camp. In the end, however, the 35-year-old trained with his club again during the tournament. Deschamps, however, refrains from bringing back his striker.

About three months later, the 54-year-old coach told Le Parisien: “There is only one truth in every situation, and Karim knows it. Our doctor’s diagnosis matched Madrid’s. His return to training could in the best case before December 10. When I left him I said to him: “Karim, there is no urgency. You will arrange your return journey with the team manager.”

Benzema is said to have left the next day – without Deschamps being aware of this. “When I woke up I found out he was gone. It was his decision, he won’t say anything else, I understand and respect it.”

“What Brutality”

Benzema’s reaction was not long in coming. In his Instagram story, the 2022 world footballer posts an excerpt from the interview and writes: “What a cheek.”

Here’s a video of a man saying, “Liar! yes you liar. You lie. You are a good liar.” Benzema, in turn, signs the video with the words “Holy Didier. Good night.”

The good thing for both of them is that they don’t really need to have anything to do with each other anymore. After second place in France at the World Cup in December, Benzema announced his final retirement from the national team. Deschamps, on the other hand, extended his contract until 2026. (mou)
