At the end of February it erupts in Valais. After almost two months, Caroline Kuyper resigned as CEO ahead of the 2027 World Ski Championships in Crans-Montana. The reasons? Different views between Kuyper and the OC on strategic leadership. She spoke to “Le Nouvelliste” about “disruptions in management” and an “imbalance in governance”.
Now Swiss-Ski presents its successor. 2010 Olympic downhill champion Didier Défago (45) will take over as CEO on May 1, 2023. The press release says: “Because of his heritage and not least as president of the Valais mountain railways (since September 2020), the five-time World Cup winner is very familiar with local conditions.”
“The opportunity that has been presented to me is unique – and I am ready to take on this great challenge,” says de Walliser of his new job. “The great know-how in the high plateau region when it comes to organizing major events and my experience in the sport should be used to make the 2027 World Cup a great ski festival.”
Swiss ski president Urs Lehmann, also president of the WM OK, is enthusiastic about the election. «Didier Défago speaks the language of the athletes, he knows the sport and he is a team player. We are convinced that, as CEO of the 2027 World Ski Championships, he will optimally master the challenges ahead thanks to his network and know-how.”
In 2027, the World Ski Championships will take place in Crans-Montana for the second time after 1987. In 2025, title fights will increase in Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Austria).
