Certainly, Red Bull showed at the season opener in Bahrain that this time it will be more than difficult to get past the Austrian racing team: two-time world champion Max Verstappen (36 GP victories) won ahead of his teammate Sergio Pérez on Sunday. A double win with announcement.
After the race, however, big notes are already being spit at Red Bull. Especially the dominator between 2014 and 2020, Mercedes, has to take a beating. There are 16 points in Sakhir for the Black Silver Arrows: 5th Hamilton, 7th Russell. However, the residuals speak a clearer language. Around 51 resp. Hamilton and Russell cross the finish line 56 seconds after Verstappen.
For Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko (9 GP races between 1971 and 1972) it is already clear: “The world title is out of reach for Mercedes.” Marko thinks this is a “realistic” estimate, he explains to “RTL/ntv” and “sport.de”.
The Austrian states that Mercedes has “not one problem, but several” with its concept for the new season. “The solution didn’t come during the winter either,” continued the 79-year-old. Due to the upper limit of the budget, it is also difficult to tweak the car during the season.
Statements made by Marko to Blick after the race in Bahrain already showed that Red Bull’s demands are high: “We have started well. But there is still room for improvement.”
And Marko doesn’t see too much danger in Ferrari either: “They’re there for a single lap and will certainly take pole position from us one or the other. But there’s really no progress in that.”
Whether Marko’s statement will retaliate will only become clear at the next race at the earliest. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will take place from March 17 to 19. (tired)
