Admir Mehmedi has always stressed that he wanted to play in Switzerland again towards the end of his career and that only his former clubs Winterthur or FCZ would be considered for him. In the FCZ environment it is said that it could take until the summer, so even the first talks should have taken place.
What’s up with the rumor? “Everything is still open,” Mehmedi tells Blick. “At the end of the season we make a layout and see what is best for us as a family. I have been in constant contact with the FCZ managers since I left and our relationship is very good.”
He left FCZ in January 2012. After engagements with Dynamo Kiev, Freiburg, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, he is under contract with Antalyaspor in the Turkish Süper Lig for 14 months. Admir lives with his wife Sevdije and their children Noar (5), Nila (3) and Nael (1) on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, where other people go on holiday. “We all feel very comfortable here,” says Mehmedi.
Like his father, Noar now wears the Antalyaspor shirt. He plays for the club’s youngest players and should have played more minutes than his father. Because he has only been used regularly since this year, because he was out for months due to an injury to his thigh. “It was annoying. But now I am pain free. After such a long break I’m not 100 percent yet, but I’m well on my way there.” In the last two games against Kasimpasa and Besiktas, Mehmedi is back in the starting line-up.
Mehmedi resigned from the national team after the European Championship in the summer of 2021. His most recent action was a converted penalty in the legendary shootout win over France in the Round of 16. There’s no better way to say goodbye. He has never regretted his resignation, says Mehmedi. “It was about time I made way for one of the many guys. I’ve had a great time in the national team and have always worn the jersey with great pride and joy.”
His immediate future is still open, he is making provisions for his long term: Mehmedi, who once completed the KV-Leere at the FCZ office together with Philippe Koch, has completed a sports management diploma. Final exams are coming up in the next few days. He currently studies for one and a half to two hours a day. «Marketing, accounting, business administration. I can benefit a lot from it. It is nice if I can already prepare for my second career.” It is clear that he wants to stay in the football world. From now on he is more interested in working for a club than as a player agent. This is still music in the future. “Although I I’ve had a few injuries in my career, I’m sure I’ll be on my feet for a few more seasons.”
Maybe at the FCZ. Maybe even with a contract with the club. After all, the striker must soon be a qualified sports manager.
