Rémi Cuche has had to overcome some difficult situations in his 22 years of life. The younger brother of Paralympics participant Robin has had to live with the fact that he is judged by outsiders on the successes of his famous uncle Didier Cuche (48) since his first youth race. Rémi experienced the absolute low point between March 2019 and September 2020 when he tore both cruciate ligaments while skiing. The racing career of the commercial employee from the Neuchâtel Jura is in acute danger at this stage. But the Romand fought back.

The young Cuche qualified for a world champion in Garmisch

This winter he achieved his first top 10 placement in the European Cup – at the Super-G in Garmisch he beat Italian former world champion Christof Hofhofer and the Swiss World Cup cracks Niels Hintermann and Gilles Roulin in fifth place. And earlier this week he came second in an FIS run in Verbier USA. “Rémi practices this sport with as much zest as before. However, unlike me, he is much calmer and more reserved,” says his uncle Didier. But how much influence does the five-time Hahnenkamm downhill winner have on his cousin’s career? «Didier is a very important advisor to me, especially in the field of materials. He always helps me a lot with that”, Rémi replies. On the slopes, young Cuche is shaped by two other alpine legends.

Two legends in the coaching staff

In NLZ-West he is trained by Frenchman Cyprien Richard (43), who triumphed in the giant slalom on the Adelboden Chuenisbärgli in 2011 and won the silver medal in the Giant World Cup that same winter. In the European Cup, Cuche is also looked after by Schwyz downhill legend Franz Heinzer (60). The expertise of the 1991 world champion is as follows: “Rémi has taken a step forward this winter, especially in the technical field.” And that is why there is a good chance that Rémi Cuche will be selected for the B selection of Swiss Ski in the spring.
