Controversial goal causes red heads and discussions

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

The scene that made Friborg fans go red: Lugano striker Marco Müller puts down Gottéron giant Dave Sutter for the winning 2-1 goal.

The fans in Friborg can hardly contain themselves. What angers her at the first pre-playoff game is the scene before Lugano’s 2-1 winning goal. Marco Müller took down Gottéron defender Dave Sutter behind goal with a lower back cross-check before Kris Bennett found the net.

The scene heats things up and divides opinion in the MySports studio. “It’s not good control for me,” says Nadir Mandioni (48), former referee and referee expert. It would have been “better” if the referees had given two penalty minutes and not allowed the scene to continue, he says. Timo Helbling (41) replies: “You can let something like that go in the play-offs, right?” The native of Solothurn once played in Fribourg and Lugano. Seen in this way he is not biased, but as a former rugged defender he is.

And surprisingly who has the same opinion as Helbling? Friborg’s trainer and sports director Christian Dubé, who was anything but a villain even on the ice. When asked if it was a foul, the French Canadian says: “No, no, there’s nothing. We’re in the goddamn playoffs. Get up and keep fighting. It’s our player’s fault.”

Dubé: “You can’t do that”

The controversial goal could have far-reaching consequences for Gottéron. The end of the season threatens in Lugano on Thursday. Another scene also had its consequences: top scorer David Desharnais got carried away by a stick that was hit between Troy Josephs’ legs in front of the goal. The Lugano striker collapses, Gottéron’s key player is sent into the shower early in the second period after consulting the video images and is then noticeably missing from his team.

Dubé also has no problem with this decision. “You can’t do that,” he says. “Today that is no longer possible. That always happened in the past. But now there is a fine.” The remaining exclusion forced him to continue playing with three lines. “When it came to pushing through in the final stages of the game, the guys were tired.”

Desharnais will not be suspended for his attack. Otherwise, the career of the 36-year-old, who is nailing his skates to the wall after this season, could have ended in the style of Zinedine Zidane. The French football giants were sent off in the 2006 World Cup final after headbutting Italian Marco Materazzi.

Walser: “Now we have the knife in our neck”

“Of course that weakened us, but we had our chances of winning without him,” says Samuel Walser, 30, of Desharnais’ freakout. The striker also does not want to accept the foul on Sutter as an excuse. “We were not always mentally ready to win this game. Now we have a knife in our neck and we have to win in Lugano. That is possible.”

Despite the defeat, his team “didn’t show a bad game at all,” says Dubé. “What should I do? We created chances, but at some point you just have to sink the puck.” complains the 45-year-old. “The counters will be reset to zero on Thursday evening. All we can do is start positive and win there. We did that twice this year.”
