“I Lost the Joy of Life”

The road back to the world’s best in snowboarding: a tough journey for David Hablützel.

A quality of David Hablützel (26) regularly makes heads shake in his environment. He even angered the doctors. In the spring of 2021, they diagnosed the snowboarder with a severe concussion after a training fall – including a brain hemorrhage. A “career killer”, according to the doctors. For Hablützel, a world collapsed. “I lost all joy in life, experienced sleepless nights.”

The three-time Olympian was taken to a head injury clinic in Zurich. No one believed in a comeback in the halfpipe. “Relatives told me to find a normal job. The lack of support hurt.” Shortly before Hablützel sank into self-pity, something decisive happened: “Suddenly I made small progress.”

The resident of Zurich successfully mastered the simplest balance exercises. “What used to be normal suddenly made me very happy.” And then she came out. The quality that sets him apart, but also often gets him into trouble: “I’m stubborn. really stubborn. I wanted to get back on the slopes, so I fought my way back.” Said. did.

Doc movie brought back the joy

The rehabilitation phase demanded everything from Hablützel. «For two to three months I couldn’t meet people, I became forgetful. Listen to music? Impossible. A visit to the restaurant? Ruled out. It was all too much for my brain.” What was left was enough time to think. Then the idea for a documentary came to him.

Together with his friend and director Dylan Gonzalez, he documented his way back to the slopes. “Thanks to the film I have found the joy in life again.” The new challenge gave him new energy. Six months after the shock diagnosis, Hablützel was back on the board. Since then, the Swiss jumped to the top of the world several times. “The brain injury almost destroyed my professional career, but it also took me a few steps further.”

The documentary comic “Bail” appeared a few days ago. Meanwhile, the snowboard topper, who is still slightly injured, is working on the next comeback. “But I will be ready for the start of the next season,” he announces.
