GC for Truth Week

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

There’s a lot at stake for GC in the coming weeks.

Giorgio Contini’s statement after the 1-1 draw in St. Gallen is clear: “It is important that we get the maximum number of points before the national break.” On Sunday, the standings meet Winterthur at home, six days later at Sion before the championship is suspended for 14 days. It’s the week of truth for the record champions.

With two wins against the bottom of the league, GC can breathe air into the table. If the result crisis continues, the situation in the fight against the fall in the barrage will worsen. By then, Bill Pan, the new strong man from China and successor to Sky Sun, will also draw up a first interim balance.

Restlessness leaves coaches and players cold

Despite the change on the board floor, the club’s uncertain future and lack of points, Contini cannot be disturbed. Was the point in St. Gallen important to him personally after three defeats and only one win in 2023? “You have to ask other people that.”

The players also try to hide the crowds around the traditional club. “It’s not my job to talk about it,” says Dominik Schmid, one of the top hoppers in St. Gallen. “We are responsible for what happens on the field.”

After Europe, only five points are missing

There are no symptoms of the crisis against St. Gallen either. The people of Zurich are very present. Insecurity? Not at all. Contini set up his team and hired them well. “That’s my job as a coach. The most important thing is that you keep trying. And as long as the team responds, that’s a good sign.”

Just like against Zurich (1:2) and Lucerne (0:1), GC is not the worst team, the point at the end is more than deserved. That’s another reason why the atmosphere is anything but basement. “Of course we have to look at what’s going on behind us,” says Schmid. “But you can also look ahead in the table, because that should be the goal.” The gap to fifth place is five points, but two wins against Winti and Sion are mandatory so that the standings can still dream of Europe.
