“It’s just terrible and crazy. Ordinary citizens suffer and have to die. A disaster,” said tennis pro Andrey Rublev at the press conference on Friday after his victory in the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament against Alexander Zverev. The number six in the world discusses the offensive war that his home country Russia has been waging against Ukraine for a year now.
Already during the semifinal against Zverev (6: 3, 7: 6), the Russian sends a meaningful message to the spectators. “Viktor Robertowitsch Tsoi is alive,” he wrote with a felt-tip pen on the screen of a TV camera during the match. The meaning? Tsoi was a Soviet music star known for his anti-war songs.
Rublev after the game: “His lyrics gave people a lot of hope back then. I hope they don’t lose it now.” Then the tennis player adds a personal wish: “I hope there will be reason and peace soon.”
The world will have to wait for the positive news Rublev wants. At this point, it doesn’t look like the war will end anytime soon. After all, things are better with the Russians in terms of sport. In Dubai, he was defeated in straight sets by Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Otherwise there is “good news” for him. Media report from England that the Russian suspension imposed last year at the Grand Slam in Wimbledon (3 to 16 July) will be lifted. Participation in the prestigious tournament should be possible again for Russians. “Everything indicates that the AELTC (organizer of the tournament, ed.) will lift the ban for Russians,” writes the Daily Telegraph.
