The cycling world has probably never seen that before. At the women’s race of the Strade Bianche one-day race in Tuscany, Italy, a horse escapes into a pasture and runs onto the track.
Demi Vollering cycles right behind the animal and probably no longer understands the world. However, the 26-year-old Dutchman is not deterred and later wins the race in the photo finish ahead of Lotte Kopecky (27) from Belgium. Best Swiss is Elise Chabbey (29) as 26th.
In men, it is a more obvious problem. Tom Pidcock wins the 17th Strade Bianche as soloist. The 2021 Olympic mountain biking champion is the first Briton to win the prestigious race.
Pidcock takes the lead of the race with just over 20km to go on the third to last of 11 dirt road sectors. In the closing stages, a smaller group of pursuers on the tarmac got very close to the 23-year-old from the Ineos-Grenadiers squad, but his competitors didn’t really agree on the detective work.
Meanwhile, Pidcock does his thing up front and celebrates his second win of the season in Tuscany. 20 seconds behind, the Frenchman Valentin Madouas secured second place in the sprint of the pursuers (che/SDA)
