Huber jumps to World Cup bronze in Big Air

Can fly: Nicolas Huber secures World Cup bronze.

Nicolas Huber wins bronze in the Big Air at the World Freestyle Championships in Bakuriani. The snowboarder from the Canton of Zurich finished third behind Taiga Hasegawa from Japan and Mons Roisland from Norway in the final.

Huber achieved a strong 89.75 points with the last jump. Because he had his hands in the snow when he landed in the first round and fell in the second round, the second World Cup medal after silver in 2017 in slopestyle was still on the line almost to the end. The two best jumps were counted.

Huber’s 150.50 points were enough in the competition, in which the athletes now jump rotations of up to 1800 degrees (five rotations around the body axis), finally with 7.50 points to third place ahead of Canadian Nicolas Laframboise.

“It’s a dream come true. I’ve been working towards this success for 16 years,” Huber says visibly moved in the SRF interview. He was “extremely grateful for the support of my family, friends, my team and the sponsors who are always behind me,” said the native of Engadine, who came surprisingly second in the slopestyle world championships in the Sierra Nevada six years ago, when he still worked as a park shaper in Silvaplana in winter.

On Monday, Huber was also represented in the slopestyle final. After two crashes he had to settle for 16th place there.

In the women’s final, which took place without Swiss participation, Austria’s Anna Gasser won ahead of Japan’s Miyabi Onitsuka and Australia’s Coady Tess. (SDA/SME)
