41 years old, but still the best Swiss: Simon Ammann in Planica

Oldie Simon Ammann is the best Swiss on the big hill at the World Cup in Planica with a 22nd place. Gold goes to Slovenian Timi Zajc.

At the last minute, Simon Ammann made it to the World Cup – his twelfth. And the four-time Olympic champion performed well in Slovenia after spending most of the summer studying and barely training. With jumps of 127.5 and 128 m, he just missed the top 20 on the big hill.

Deschbanden missed a personal goal

After the first lap he should have hoped for a little more from 17th, but then fell back a few places, just like from the small hill (28th). His biggest handicap, as it has been for years, is the landing. Because he awards a lot of points and 5 to 10 places compared to his competitors. Nevertheless, he could be satisfied with his performance in the valley of the hills, where he became ski flying world champion in 2010.

Gregor Deschwand, the best Swiss ski jumper of the last two years, could not be satisfied. After 19th place on the normal hill, there was now 24th place for jumps of 126 and 124.5 m. As a result, the Lucerne native missed his declared goal for Planica, which was to improve his personal best at the world championship. This remains a 14th place from 2015 in Falun.

Zajc outperforms Kobayashi

Remo Imhof (44th) and Killian Peier (47th), who finished third in the World Cup in Seefeld/Innsbruck four years ago, clearly missed qualifying for the second round. They have another chance in the team competition on Saturday.

In the stadium, which was full for the first time at this World Cup, Slovenian Timi Zajc celebrated a home victory with jumps of 137.5 and 137 m and the first gold medal for the hosts. With a nice second jump he passed the rest leader Ryoyu Kobayashi. The two-time Four Hills Tournament winner and Olympic champion from Japan won his first World Cup medal. Poland’s Dawid Kubacki took bronze, while World Cup leader Halvor Egner Granerud again left empty-handed. (SDA)
