Did the Spengler Cup circus cost Ambri the pre-playoffs?

The Ambri players Filip Chlapik, Tim Heed and Andre Heim (left to right) are exhausted after Thursday’s derby defeat, they can no longer make it to the pre-playoffs.

Ambri sports director Paolo Duca does not want to make a detailed analysis yet: “I will certainly not ignore this. But despite everything, we still have one game ahead of us that will be our focus. I ask for your understanding.”

Either way, it’s a challenge to find obvious reasons why the Leventine didn’t make the top 10 like it did last year. Because: Ambri has 66 points on the bill – the same number as in 2021/22 at the end. Unlike last season, Ambri could count on strong performances from foreign field players with Spacek, Chlapik, Heed and Virtanen. And also the key players with a Swiss license were at the same score level as last season or even improved: Bürgler (+6), Zwerger (+2), Pestoni (+1), Heim (-1).

Lost 9 points against Ajoie

So it’s the details that cost Ambri the pre-playoffs. For example, that 9 out of 12 possible points were left against Ajoie. “These hurt,” says Duca, “we wanted too much in these games and were countered.”

In retrospect, the Spengler Cup should also be a topic. With the triumph at the traditional tournament, accompanied by a goosebumps atmosphere from the fans, Ambri inspired people beyond the national borders between Christmas and New Year. The days in Davos were huge for the organization, both PR machine and emotional.

After the Spengler Cup, Ambri slipped

But maybe after the whole circus at the HCD show tournament, both the tension and the energy were no longer at the highest level. And then ultimately missing in the core business. Ambri remained consistently in the top 10 until the turn of the year, after which the Spengler Cup winner continuously slipped.

“It may have cost us some energy in the short term, but we also brought a lot of positives with us. I don’t think the Spengler Cup is to blame,” replies Duca. And finally gets a bit analytical: “We lost too many close games and couldn’t reap the rewards of our work. This is also reflected in the advanced statistics (advanced statistics, ed.) »
