Uncomfortable days and weeks lie ahead for 21-year-old professional cyclist Antonio Tiberi. He got off with a hefty fine after shooting San Marino’s tourism minister’s cat, but that’s not all.

Federico Amati, the owner of the cat, was disappointed with the court’s decision and does not want to stop there. Amati appreciates Tiberi’s honesty in the “Corriere della Sera”, but wants to campaign for the expulsion of the professional cyclist: “Still, we don’t have to give these people shelter.”

San Marino’s tourism minister is certainly not the only one who thinks Tiberi got off too easily because of his stupidity. His team has since responded to the verdict and suspended him for 20 days. Far too little if you look at the reactions on the net. But it should not stop with this punishment.

Luca Guercilena, general manager of Tiberis Trek-Segafredo racing team, criticizes his protégé to oasport.it and announces further sanctions. “It was a serious and irresponsible act, as he himself admitted. And then he didn’t warn us as a team, which was just as bad. We started with a minimal suspension, will analyze more facts and then decide whether we need to take tougher measures.”

Tiberi himself apologized again on his Twitter channel and announced that he would donate all of his prize money for the upcoming season to animal welfare organizations in San Marino. A gesture that is not enough for many, who believe that the professional cyclist should have received a longer sentence or imprisonment. (dti)
