Cadiz, currently ranked 16th, is urging Spain’s LaLiga bosses to suspend play immediately.
The reason: a fatal error by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande (46) in the match against Elche on January 16. Before equalizing to make it 1-1, Elche striker Ezequiel Ponce was clearly offside – but neither the referee nor VAR saw it.
On February 9, the Spanish Football Federation RFEF rejected a lawsuit brought by the Andalusians for “manifest and grave errors”. That is why the club has now appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS, the club announced on Wednesday. In the course of this, Cadiz requested “the temporary suspension of the match until the effective end of the proceedings”.
The reasoning: “Only by taking this precaution can the damage caused be prevented or become absolutely irreparable.” The suspension of competition activities is “necessary to protect the integrity of the competition”.
The club, which is in danger of relegation, is demanding a “partial replay” of the game, starting just before the “negligent action of the refereeing team”. To substantiate their claim, the club board refers to two international matches that were also repeated in whole or in part.
Cadiz, who should play against third-placed Real Sociedad on Friday evening (9pm), is firmly convinced that the CAS will make a “favorable decision” in the best interest of the club. “Any decision to the contrary would seriously undermine the integrity and development of the sports league in question.” (che)
