Author: GRANTED

The event was held yesterday, and 80 sailboats from five continents will participate

He J80 World 2023, which will be held from September 18 to 24 in Baiona under the organization Monte Real Yacht Club, was officially unveiled yesterday. The one that the host club describes as “the nautical event of the year in the Galician community” will gather in Rías Baixas 80 sailboats they come from five continents, where the best sailors in the world will sail and compete all week on these 8-meter monodesigns.

The Spanish Navy J80 will be one of those with the largest and most prominent presence at the event, as a large number of units are expected to participate under this flag, among them some of the most successful athletes class. Four J80 world champions have already confirmed that they will be in Baiona with the aim of defending their titles. Among them is a canary Rayco Tabares (Arrecife, 1984), which has five World Cups (Santander, 2009; Kiel, 2015; Sotogrande, 2016; Hamble, 2017; Les Sables d’Olonne, 2018) in a class equally competitive and close to the J80.

complicated scenario

exactly Competitiveness, both nationally and internationally, is one of the aspects that will stand out, according to Tabares, at the Baiona World Cup because “the level of J80 has been increasing over the years and right now they are competing with great mastery around the world,” he says. The Canarian believes that Galicia will be a difficult environment to stay in, but confirms that “it will be a real luxury to sail in such a special place with such a deep-rooted maritime culture”.

Another skipper to consider, with two world championships in his pocket, is Santander Jose Maria, Pichu, Torcida, who will return to Baiona barely a year after receiving his third National Sailing Award for the best sailor of the year in the Galician fishing town. “My intention is to be as high as possible in the ranking. It won’t be easy because I’m sure the level will be very high. he says.
