The BNP Paribas Open, popularly known as Indian Wells, announced on Tuesday that Rafa Nadal will not be able to participate in this year’s edition due to an injury he has been carrying since January. “We want Rafa to continue his recovery and hope to see him again next year,” Indian Wells director Tommy Haas said in a statement, explaining that the Spaniard had officially withdrawn from the tournament.
At the last Australian Open, Nadal injured the iliopsoas of his left leg in mid-January, and he has six to eight weeks to recover. Nadal announced at the beginning of February that due to an injury he will not be able to perform at the exhibition scheduled for March 5 in Las Vegas (USA) against his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz.
That withdrawal left his participation in Indian Wells, the first Masters 1000 of the season to be held March 6-19 in the California desert, up in the air, until it was confirmed this Tuesday that he would finally be unable to attend.
I kept many points
Nadal is a three-time Indian Wells champion, and in 2022 he lost in the final of this tournament to the American Taylor Fritz.
With Indian Wells already ruled out, the next stop on the calendar is the Miami Open (from March 19 to April 2), the date for which Nadal is registered, but it is not yet known if he will finally play.
