Now ter Stegen blows up the new attack

For more than 10 years, the German goalkeeper constellation: number one Manuel Neuer (left) and his replacement Marc-André ter Stegen.

Since 2010, Manuel Neuer has been the undisputed permanent goalkeeper of the Germans and even captain after winning the 2014 World Cup. This era could come to an abrupt end with his injury-related absence. Because Marc-André ter Stegen, the eternal number two behind the 36-year-old, blows to attack the permanent place. “Of course my goal is to become number one – also in the national team,” the old Barça goalkeeper explains to the “kicker”.

His goal is also to be between the posts at the home European Championship in 2024. “I believe that my performances in recent years have been good and I have also matured in the national team and am ready for the next step,” said the 30-year-old.

Strong values speak for ter Stegen

Since his debut in May 2012 – Germany lost 5-3 to Switzerland in Basel – only 30 international matches have been played, of which 15 friendly international matches. It wasn’t until Neuer broke his metatarsal bone in 2017 that Ter Stegen was a regular goalkeeper. At that time he also won the Confederations Cup with the DFB team.

And in the current season, his values speak for themselves. The 1.87 meter tall goalkeeper only conceded eight goals in 23 league matches. He has an 86 percent success rate and concedes a goal every 296 minutes on average.

“I’ll Do Anything”

Now the former Gladbach goalkeeper wants a permanent place in the DFB goal: “I will do everything I can to show my maximum performance in the position I am in now and help the team.” But he has not been set automatically, his role has not yet been discussed. The international matches against Peru and Belgium are scheduled for the end of March. In the run-up, “the World Cup must be worked out and the situation analyzed”.

“The coach will then make the decisions he needs to make,” said the keeper. His biggest competitor is probably Kevin Trapp (32) from Eintracht Frankfurt. In general, ter Stegen thinks that “a lot is changing in terms of personnel”. (che)
