That is not how the team of Haas and Mick Schumacher (23) had imagined their collaboration. After two years, they broke up after the last season. An episode of the Netflix documentary “Drive to Survive” revealed how ugly their breakup was.
The streaming platform hit show devoted an entire episode (entitled “Like Father, Like Son”) to Schumacher’s battle for a premier class cockpit. Telephone conversations between American race team owner Gene Haas and team boss Günther Steiner were also recorded. They reveal how mercilessly Mick Schumacher was dropped by his team.
Two serious crashes seemed to make those responsible lose confidence that Schumacher could ever succeed for them in Formula 1.
After the first accident at the Saudi Arabian GP, Gene Haas asked his team boss how badly the car was damaged. “It’s bad, Gene, I’d say between half a million and a million.” Steiner: “We have now given him a year to study, and what does he do? In the second race he fucking destroys his car because the other one is faster.” – “He’s probably going to get a little over his head”, Gene Haas already has doubts about the son of Michael Schumacher (54, 91 GP wins).
The 23-year-old was eventually dropped after his accident in Monaco, where his car literally ripped in half. “It takes talent. You can’t develop talent,” said the race team’s owner, to which his team boss replied: “No, you can’t buy that and you can’t develop it.”
Before the next race in Baku, Steiner told a team member: “If he crashes here again, he will be torn to pieces. Not by me, but by the crowd. You already know what to listen to from Gene? You have no idea Gene hates nothing more than when you crash a car.”
That was mid-June. In July Schumacher then, probably without the belief of his superiors, finished eighth and twice sixth in the points in Great Britain and Austria. His contract with Haas was not renewed.
In total, Schumacher scored 12 points in 43 races in the Haas. He finished in 16th place at the World Cup last season. This season, Schumi has been appointed test and reserve driver for Mercedes and McLaren. (dti)
