At the tender age of 41, Steven Nyman has had enough. The ski oldie hangs up his ski boots after next weekend.
“My love for skiing is unbroken, but I have reached my physical limit and can no longer compete at the highest level,” Nyman explained the decision in a statement from the American Ski Association. “I’m happy that my last race this weekend in Aspen will be on home snow.”
Nyman made his World Cup debut in 2002 – finishing 15th in a slalom in Flachau. But Nyman celebrated his greatest successes in the downhill, especially in Val Gardena. Three wins in the downhill classic also earned him the nickname “King of the Saslong”. They are his only World Cup victories. There are also three second and five third places in the World Cup and participation in three Olympic Games and five World Championships.
As a child, he dreamed of being able to compete precisely on these occasions, and he surpassed these dreams many times over. Now he looks forward to saying goodbye in front of his home crowd in Aspen.
