The rumors had been going on for weeks, now it’s official: Timo Meier no longer plays for the San Jose Sharks. The 26-year-old goalscorer (31 goals and 21 assists this season) has been traded to the New Jersey Devils.
There Meier meets several compatriots. The captain of The Devils is former number 1 draft pick Nico Hischier (24). Defender Jonas Siegenthaler (25) and goalkeeper Akira Schmid (22) also play for the three-time Stanley Cup champion. New Jersey currently ranks second in the Metropolitan Division and is one of the title contenders.
Meier was drafted by the Sharks in the first round of the 2015 NHL draft (ranked ninth overall). For the California State franchise, he recorded 154 goals and 162 assists in 451 games during the regular season. The Herisauer is in the final year of his contract for 2019, earning an average of $6 million per season.
On Saturday, a Swiss national team attacker was also exchanged in Nino Niederreiter. The 30-year-old from Chur had to leave Nashville and is another storm for the Winnipeg Jets. (cat)
