Fanny Smith wins bronze

Fanny Smith climbs onto the World Cup podium.

Strong performance by Fanny Smith (30) at the World Ski Cross Championships in Bakuriani (Geo). She wins bronze. The title goes to dominator Sandra Näslund. The Swede breaks loose early in the final and cannot be taken away from the victory. It is her 19th (!) success in a row.

It gets exciting behind her. In the final meters, Smith and Katrin Ofner fought a very close duel for silver. In the end, the finish photo must be decisive – in favor of the Austrian. But the bronze medal is also a great success for Smith.

Lots of emotions at the finish

Her reaction at the finish shows how much this means to her. Vaud’s wife sits down and cries. The reason? Just ten days ago, Smith had a hard crash. On the Reiteralm (Austria) she not only twisted her knee, but also suffered a mild concussion. Participation in the World Cup was on the verge. Now there is a happy ending.

“I am so happy with this 3rd place finish,” Smith told SRF. “It was really hard. Even before the final I was so emotional, I had to fight to get back in the right mood.” She emphasizes that she had never been able to get back on the podium so quickly after her fall. helped to get back on top very grateful for that. That was only possible with a team.”

The other Swiss miss the final. Sixtine Cousin and Talina Gantenbein got stuck in the semifinals and became 5th and 6th, Saskja Lack was 13th.

Sixth World Cup Medal

For Smith it is already the sixth World Cup medal. In 2013 she won the first gold. In addition, she won silver three times in a row from 2017 to 2021 and bronze in 2015. In addition, there are two bronze medals from the Olympic Games.

So far, Smith has not been up to speed this season, partly due to heavy falls. After all, she was on the podium three times this winter. In comparison, in their best year, 2021, there were ten podiums, six of which were wins.

Swiss disappoint

Unlike women, there is disappointment in men. With Jonas Lenherr (10th), Joos Berry (14th) and Marc Bischofberger (16th), the Swiss trio got stuck in the quarterfinals. Surprisingly, Simone Deromedis won the title. The 22-year-old takes Italy’s first medal in a ski cross world championship. Behind him, Florian Wilmsmann (De) and Erik Mobärg (Sd) complete the podium.
