A few months before the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, world-class French defender Wendie Renard surprisingly announced her retirement from the national team.
“I love France more than anything. I am far from perfect, but I can no longer support the current system, which is far from the demands required at the highest level,” the 32-year-old writes social media. She therefore resigns from the team led by coach Corinne Diacre.
The 1.87 meter tall Renard played 142 games for the French national team. The relationship between Diacre and the central defender of Olympique Lyon is considered tense. Renard also hints at mental problems. “It’s a sad day, but necessary to maintain my mental health,” said the old captain of the French.
Following Renard, attackers Kadidiatou Diani and Marie-Antoinette Katoto have taken the same step. They also bring “necessary managerial changes” into the field and announce that they will not appear again for the national team until the changes are made. (SDA)
