Fine hands instead of fast legs

Dario Bürgler is also a top player in his second season with Ambri.

Two years ago, in the middle of the Corona crisis, Dario Bürgler worried whether he would still be able to work for a club. “Although I had the feeling that I still had enough qualities.” After five seasons with HC Lugano, he switched to cantonal rival Ambri in 2021. But by no means to end his career in a comfortable way, on the contrary. The veteran is one of the most important players for Leventine’s team. His contract was extended early to 2025 – a clear appreciation.

Even in his first season with Ambri, Bürgler was an important puzzle piece on the way to the pre-playoffs, which the Biancoblù only secured in the last qualifier in extremis. Also in this season, the striker convinces with his fine hands. “I’ve never been the fastest,” says the 35-year-old, “if my legs were faster maybe my hands wouldn’t work as well.” Bürgler is technically savvy, can make his teammates better, but is also good at finishing.

Best Swiss goal getter at Ambri

He does not attach too much importance to his own score – the Schwyzer is currently the best Swiss goalscorer at Ambri and the third best in the league. “I don’t think about that too much. Of course I’m happy, but the team’s points are more important.” And Ambri needs a few more to make their way to a pre-playoff spot. “The victory over Biel has encouraged us.” HCD is now waiting for Friday, this game will be broadcast live on Blick TV (starting at 7:25 PM). “We care about a lot.”

Despite the increase in the number of foreign players, Bürgler has earned a key role in the Leventine team and carries responsibility, including in power play. That he can play so well is also a matter of confidence. “I feel the confidence of the coach, the head of sport. I know myself well enough to know that this will help me reach my full potential.”

And the increasing age does not play a spanner in the works for him either. “I feel good, try to get the most out of me.” However, the 35-year-old Bürgler feels a difference with the 25-year-old: “In the morning after a game I need an hour or two more until I have warmed up again.”
