Wind frustration for Swiss ski trainers at the World Cup

Ski acrobat Noe Roth poses with his trainer and father Michel Roth.

Of No Roth and Pirmin Werner, Switzerland have two hot irons in the battle for the ski acrobat medals. But do they really get a chance to jump around?

On Wednesday morning, gusts of wind turned on the organizers Bakuriani again a spanner in the works. A final attempt is scheduled for Thursday.

Time pressure forces World Cup format

Michel Roth, head coach of the air teams, speaks of a frustrating situation. “We had a plan, but no chance to execute it.” You haven’t been able to train properly since they arrived. While the women’s qualifying was pushed through with several interruptions on Tuesday night, the men’s is still pending. Also on Wednesday morning it was simply not possible to jump with the wind.

On Thursday there will be one last chance to make the medal decision – but only in abbreviated form (for organizational reasons, the event must be finished by 2 p.m.). “It’s a pity,” says Michel Roth, since the floodgates are open to arbitrariness. Qualification is performed with only one vault, the final of the top twelve with only two vaults – with only the top six advancing to the Super Final. “If you wind up at the wrong time captureddon’t get enough speed, you’re out of the decision.”

If the event had to be cancelled, the ranking from the qualifier (if it could be completed) would be used.

Why did Bakuriani no test drive?

The great chagrin for Roth is that these problems come as no surprise. “If a rehearsal event carried out, you would have seen that the wind is a problem.” There were several reasons why this did not happen. “There are several excuses,” says Roth, citing them Pandemic and the outbreak of war in Ukraine as examples. “People really try everything here, but just have no experience with it,” Roth defends the helpers and organizers on site, but the frustration remains.

Finally, Switzerland would have No Roth and Pirmin Werner two medal contenders. But the top two cracks weren’t deterred by the trappings. “They’re hot,” says Roth. Now only the conditions should come into play. He’s really optimistic Aerial head coach but not: “My weather app also shows wind for tomorrow.”
