Lazio legend Candreva shows Feyenoord how it’s done, Hateboer helps Atalanta

Feyenoord, watch out! Tonight the unassuming Salernitana showed how to beat Lazio, a performance Rotterdammers need on Thursday to winter in the Europa League.

Salernitana withered away in Serie A thanks to a Lazio legend in Rome: 1-3.

Antonio Candrevac

Antonio Candreva made no fewer than 192 appearances for Lazio, the club based in his hometown of Rome. In five seasons he became a crowd pleaser, a fixture in the Italy national team and wanted to stay longer.

However, Lazio thought differently and sold the midfielder to Internazionale, then managed by Frank de Boer, in the summer of 2016. Now 35, Candreva is a teammate of Tonny Vilhena at the humble Salernitana.

He played his last international match almost five years ago. But he still shows his class every now and then. Like tonight when he visited his old love Lazio with Salernitana.

Antonio Candreva is the focus of celebration after his dream goal against his former club Lazio.

In the 51st minute, Candreva took a deep pass with the outside of the right foot. Once he landed the ball on the pitch and then subtly lulled it over Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, who was desperately throwing himself in the air.

Candreva’s miracle goal equalized for Salernitana after Mattia Zaccagni opened the scoring just before half-time. And it was the beginning of another downfall for the home side as Federico Fazio and Boulaye Dia completed the humiliation: 1-3.

Former Feyenoord player Vilhena replaced the Salerno side in the closing stages.

Hateboer helps Atalanta to win

The defeat saw Lazio miss out on second place in Serie A behind leaders Napoli. That’s currently in the hands of Atalanta Bergamo, who won 2-0 at Empoli.

Lookman and Hateboer after Atalanta’s second goal

Hans Hateboer, who was not included in the pre-selection of the Dutch national team for the upcoming World Cup, scored the opening goal after more than half an hour after preliminary work by Teun Koopmeiners and Ademola Lookman.

Exactly at half-time, Koopmeiners, who was in the pre-selection, had an excellent chance to double the lead with a penalty. But goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario parried the shot with his left leg.

TV viewer De Roon

Teammate Marten de Roon also saw it from his living room. The Orange international is currently struggling with a hamstring injury and is hoping to recover in time for the World Cup.

In the second half, Atalanta scored the second goal via Lookman. At Empoli, Sam Lammers stayed on the bench throughout the game.

AC Milan in Turin

AC Milan took second place later in the evening but surprisingly lost 2-1 to Torino.

Turin had to pull out all the stops against the reigning national champions from the start, which cost ex-Ajax player Perr Schuurs a yellow card after a quarter of the game. But it was the home team that turned the game upside down within two minutes.

Perr Schuurs celebrates from above after Koffi Djidji’s 1-0 win over AC Milan.

First it was Ivorian Koffi Djidji who headed the ball just behind goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu and two minutes later it was 2-0 on the ropes. This time it was the Russian Aleksey Mirantjouk, who hit the far corner with a nice slide.

Torino had nothing to add after the break, but it took an error from goalkeeper Vanja Milinkoviv-Savic and defender Alessandro Buongiorno to give Junior Messias a chance to put the ball into Torino’s vacated goal.

Whatever Milan tried after that with substitute Sergiño Dest, Torino persevered. Leaders Napoli beat Sassuolo 4-0 on Saturday and are now five points clear of the rest.
