Irene Schouten won the 5,000 meters by force majeure in Thialf at the qualifying tournament for the World Cup circuit. In a class of her own was Jutta Leerdam over the 1,000 meters, a distance where Femke Kok missed out on a ticket to the World Championships.
Schouten continued to win in Heerenveen in a time of 6:52:19. On Saturday she had already been the fastest over the 3,000 meters during the day, after which she also won the second race for the Marathon Cup in Enschede in the evening.
In the 5,000 meters, Schouten was more than six seconds faster than number two, Sanne in ‘t Hof. The top five earned a ticket to the only 5,000m run by the women at this year’s World Cup competitions in Calgary in December.
Merel Conijn, Arianna Pruisscher and Joy Beune have placed next to Schouten and In ‘t Hof.

After her win, Schouten also received the Skater of the Year award. “A great honor,” said Schouten. She could be brief about her winning stage: “I knew what had to be driven. I wasn’t allowed to drive lap 33, that was my job. And I succeeded.
Schouten wasn’t quite happy with her form this weekend. “It wasn’t a super ride, you won’t become a world champion with it.”
In the 1,000 meters, Jutta Leerdam was no less than 1.3 seconds faster than number two, Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, with a time of 1:13.53. Femke Kok finished sixth in 1.15.67 and missed out on a World Championship ticket.
Kok finished second behind Leerdam in the last NK distances. She drove four of the five 1000 meter races in the World Cup circuit and finished sixth in the final standings.
Michelle de Jong, Marrit Fledderus and Isabel Grevelt also drive to the first four World Cup weekends. Leerdam, De Jong and Fledderus also took a ticket over 500 meters.
Leerdam could look back on an excellent 1,000 meters: It was the fifth fastest time ever driven in Heerenveen. “I would never have dreamed of driving a weekend like this,” said a happy Leerdam.
Kok was very disappointed that he missed the ticket. “That sucks. Sometimes you just have a bad day and today was that. It kind of messes up the start of the season for me.”

Marijke Groenewoud won the mass start in Heerenveen at the end of a long day of skating. Together with Irene Schouten, she drove to the finish for the rest, where Schouten let her teammate win.
National coach Rintje Ritsma will later announce which two riders will take part in the first World Cup races.
The first four World Cup competitions will be held in Stavanger and Heerenveen (in November) and twice in Calgary (in December). The fifth World Cup and the World Cup final will take place in Poland in February.
The starting cards for the European Championships All-Around and Sprint in Hamar, beginning of January, will be handed out in the NK at the end of December. The participants in the World Championship distances in early March in Heerenveen will be announced after the National Championship distances in early February.
